How to Buy a Longboard

If you’re interested in buying a longboard, it can be a very tricky process choosing which one is the right one for you. There are several different types of decks available, each one for a different purpose. The different decks available are:

  • Pintails - A popular style of board that has a teardrop-shaped deck which is usually a good type of deck to start with if you’re a beginner.
  • Drop-deck - Drop-deck boards are named so because the middle of the deck is lower than where the trucks (the metal turning mechanism that attach the longboard wheels to the deck) are mounted.
  • Hybrid - Hybrids tend to be shorter than other types of longboards and they have cutouts for the wheels which allow the wheels to turn at sharper angles. This allows the hybrid board to go faster around corners and handle turns much better than the other board types.
  • Cruiser - The cruiser deck is seen as the “classic” look deck as it is the one resembling a normal skateboard the most.

A factor in deciding what kind of longboard you should get is knowing what you want to use it for. The longer boards are more stable than the shorter boards and so are used for things like riding to work or if you’re a student, riding between classes on campus. The shorter boards are much more agile than the longer boards so they can be fun to use for riding bowls or taking sharp turns and corners.

If you’re looking to get into tricks here are a couple of tips to keep in mind:

  • Footbraking is where you use your feet to break or slow down when you are going downhill fast and can be disastrous to shoes and your wallet. It’s best to invest in very cheap shoes in order to not spend too much money on shoes as the soles of your shoes can easily melt from the heat the friction between your foot and the road can generate.
  • Racing tuck is the act of tucking in your body while riding, to make your body as small as possible so as to increase the center of gravity on the board in order to reach higher speeds.
  • Once you’ve got your racing tuck perfected and your footbraking skills, you can move on to drifting. Drifting is a balance between gripping the corner and sliding round it. For proper drifting control, learn how to move your weight around on the board to help go around sharp turns and make sure to get the right kind of gloves you can use in sliding. You can even make them yourself with the right materials.

Last but not least, safety is always the most important factor in longboarding, so make sure you always wear pads, a helmet and gloves.
